Excellence Initiative PARADIVE project: the integrated study of parasitism, biodiversity and environmental change
The project was part of the IDUB I.3.4 Action “Creation of three research teams that will initiate development of scientific networks conducting studies in the area of civilization diseases, emerging pollutants and circular economy”. PARADIVE refined state-of-the-art approaches to integrate past observations of parasitic interactions into models to predict changes in occurrence and prevalence of marine and terrestrial parasitism and their relationship with climate, disease, host diversity and parasite specialization during environmental crises. This was achieved by building a large database of parasitic interactions based on the historical and fossil record of parasitic traces associated with skeletons of marine ectotherms and resistant propagules of terrestrial zoonotic parasites associated with vertebrate remains using approaches from data mining and machine learning to computed tomography and digital microscopy. Combined with modelling, simulations and comparative phylogenetic analysis, the results proved not only be crucial to better predict the response of parasites and diseases they cause to current climate change, but also better understand the evolution of parasite-host interactions, food webs and the extinction risk of symbionts more generally.
